Saints Down Under

6 Saints and a coach preparing to take on the World U24 Champs in Perth, Australia. Due to internet issues, this was a couple of days ago, and things are in full swing now. Jack Lynch is missing from this photo but playing for Ireland, right now, on the livestream... check it out.

G'wan Jack.

The footage will be archived there too, so don't worry if you only see this later!

Last weekend our mixed squad had a very successful weekend in Nottingham playing in Division 2 Nationals. The Saints won the entire competition in an undefeated performance, dominating the final against Liverpool with a 14-5 win. Full scores for the two days were:

StA 11 - 3 Nottingham Trent

StA 12 - 4 Exeter

StA 10 - 5 Bangor

StA 9 - 8 Durham

StA 9 - 4 Sussex

StA 14 - 8 Cambridge

StA 11 - 7 Durham

StA 14 - 5 Liverpool

With scores like that and 3 Scottish teams in the top 4 at Division 1 Nationals, the strength of the region was very much displayed. This brings an end to the indoor mixed season, but training continues as we run up to Mens and Womans Nationals in Glasgow in February

We had an amazing time at the first tournament of the year in Stirling this last weekend. Designed so that beginners can get their first taste of a competitive Ultimate weekend, "Stirling Tune-Up" was a great success for the two teams we sent.

St Andrews 2's lost just one game the whole weekend (by 1 point!) and finished in 5th place, and St Andrews 1's only went and won the whole thing (out of 24 teams!)!! It was a fantastic final against FarFlung - Glasgow University Ultimate, both teams pushing each other right to the end. The standard of play was really high from every team there, but our players excelled and absolutely smashed it. Many thanks to University of Stirling Ultimate Frisbee Team for once again organising such a fantastic event.

Last week our very own Jack Lynch was in Carole, Italy, competing in the European Ultimate Club Finals! Playing as part of the Reading Mixed squad, Jack was asked to play with this top club team in Carole just weeks before the championships after he consistently impressed at their trainings.

Jack and the team from Reading went on to have an incredible tournament, finishing with a bronze medal (and as the highest placed British Mixed team) as well as coming 2nd in the Spirit of the Game category. This is a huge accomplishment on such an impressive stage, and we are delighted with the result and are super proud of Jack!

Following on from the tournament, Jack has been invited to play with Reading at the World Ultimate Club Championships in Cincinnati next summer. It's a big year for Jack, as one of 7 (seven!) Saints players at WFDF Ubder-24s in Australia in January before the adult World Clubs in July.

Is this a record?

This weekend University of St Andrews Flatball had an unprecedented number of players and graduates at UKU Club Nationals:

James Glover, Gordon Kerr, Helena Slater and Niamh Delaney for Black Eagles (pictured), the new UK Mixed Division Champions, qualifying for Euros and Worlds

(Special mention for Peter Dennis, who never studied here but was introduced to the sport as a 16 year old at Madras College during our outreach sessions, and played a summer with us)

Harry Glasspool and Annie Glasspool for SMOG Mixed, 2nd overall and qualifying for Euros

Rory Curran and Harriet Hopper for Glasgow Mixed

Rob Sturrock and Casimir Chanteau-Gedrich for Ka-Pow! Open

Jack Lynch for Reading Open

Peter Worsley for Flump Open

David Ironside (and the incoming postgrad Chun Lee) for Brighton City Open

Gabe Schechter, Ryan Moar, Hugo Turner, Connor Rock, Lochlan Fisher and Arek Aspinwall for Alba Open

Did you play for Flatball* back in the day? Or did you just go drinking with them? Come catch up with faces old and new and visit the old town for some friz, some food and a night out. Details TBD - by the people who are coming! - but it's going to be epic.

I don't even know exactly when the club was founded - '92 or '93. So let's just call it '92 and say it's the 25 Year Anniversary. Unfortunately, team photos from back then were a more offline affair, so you're stuck with an event pic of the 2006-7 Glasgow One Day squad - the oldest I can find on FB. :-)

Parnters invited of course, and also any old tagalongs like Sam and Keith and Tony...

*Or indeed, The Flatball Project, Flying Sorcerors, Calamary Celts or Biological Speculation...

At the end of July we had a number of players competing at Club Outdoor Regionals in both the North and South regions.

Arek Aspinwall, Connor Rock, Gabe Schechter, Lochlan Fisher, Robbie Jones and Ryan Moar were selected for a new club representing Scotland in the Northern region, Alba Ultimate. Jack Lynch was playing in the South for Reading Ultimate.

Both teams had successful weekends and both comfortably qualified for Nationals held at the end of August. Saints Ultimate players once again shone through, with Ryan Moar earning MVP for Alba and Jack Lynch earning MVP for Reading!

Congrats to all the boys for the strong performances this weekend, and we wish you the best of luck for Nationals!

Many of our ladies will be at Nationals also - but women's regionals wasn't a thing. :-)

Our 2017/18 Mens Captain, Gabe Schechter, is running for the chance to become the European Youth Player of the Year, and the talented James Leech has made him a highlight reel to show off some of his best bits. Give it a watch and drop it a like, it's a pretty sick vid!

Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel if you haven't done already for more highlights and matches which will be released in the coming months.
