Spring 2019 Update

By saints-ultimate, Mar 20 2019 04:07PM

Whew - Another busy few weeks!

Back at Indoor Nationals in February, we once again had some fantastic performances. The Men's team made the quarters despite some key injuries (and with multiple freshers on the team), while the Women's firsts played some great Ultimate but ended up on the wrong side of a few close games before smashing the lower brackets on Sunday.

But the real story is the Women's 2s, who heroically qualified for Division 2 Nationals back in November but then did a whole lot more than make up the numbers! Despite losing the opening game 9-0, our athletic but mostly-fresher team went on a steep learning curve that took them all the way to the Quarter Finals, including a draw against the eventual winners. The futures of both men's and women's teams look bright with so many freshers getting exposure at the highest level.

Next up was University Mixed Outdoor Nationals, here in St Andrews, where once again our first team stormed into quarters before losing out to one of the finalists. Our second team joined in the fun, beating multiple first teams on their way to a top-20 finish.

In the BUCS league, our Men's 2nds eventually lost out on promotion behind only Aberdeen (a top 12 team in the UK) with wins over all the other second teams as well as Stirling firsts. The men’s firsts followed up their spectacular win over Strathclyde by dropping rapidly down the league in the midst of a major injury crisis, but pulled it all together with some late-season wins to qualify for the BUCS Trophy – where they will start as strong favourites with all their injured players back in the squad.

And at Women’s Regionals, the women’s firsts overcame terrible weather and a very tough pool draw to qualify once again for Division 1 Nationals, while the women’s seconds smashed it once again and qualified for Division 2. For the third year in a row, we’ll have a great big bus and 3 whole teams all heading down to Nottingham for Nationals on the 13/14 April. Huge thanks to the University who just spent £4,500 on our hotels and transport for this event – truly we are the luckiest club in the world.

And while all this was happening, we got a total of FIVE players selected for their country for this summer’s WFDF U24 Championships in Germany.

Aidan Steer, GB U24 Mixed

Ella Hamilton-Foad, GB U24 Women

Jack Lynch, Ireland U24 Men

Chun Lee (graduated 2018), GB U24 Men

Gabi Starek (Graduated 2018), GB U24 Women

Congratulations to all! (And fingers crossed for the athletes still involved in the trials process for GB U20s!)
